You can hear dolphin sonar signals with a hydrophone, a kind of microphone designed to respond to vibrations in water.

The dolphin signals appear very simple to the ear - just clicks, with no tonal quality; very, very short in duration. They are produced one after the other in rapid click trains, or more slowly.
